Originally from the Republic of Ireland, Caolán O'Loughlin has been living and working in the United States since June 2007. The Irish native is struck by the contrasts in landscapes between the water-girded Emerald Isle and the vast emptiness of the plains here in Nebraska. His current work explores the notion of uninhabited space where unseen human activity lingers somewhere off the picture plane in photographs, 3-dimensional objects, and paintings that blend the stark with the serene. "I aim to give the viewer the sense of vastness that is typical to the Midwestern landscape," he says, "while also communicating the significance of human presence and absence."
